Govardhan Puja
Happy New Year Vikram Samvat 2082
|
4:30 PM on Wednesday, October 22, 2025 at Hindu Temple and Om Shanti Hall, Beavercreek, Ohio
This year we are organizing our annual Govardhan Puja and Annakut to celebrate Diwali and New Year on Friday, October 22, 2025. Govardhan Puja is an auspicious festival in the Hindu culture that occurs a day after Diwali to commemorate the Bala Rupa (child form) of Lord Shri Krishna. According to Hindu mythology, people of Braj turned to Lord Krishna for help, from the torrential rains and storms inflicted on them by Lord Indra. Lord Krishna then lifted the Govardhan Mountain on his little finger, and people of Vraj took shelter under it for seven days, unaffected by hunger and thirst. Devotees of Lord Krishna worship offer him a ‘mountain’ of food – 56 varieties, which is why food plays an important role in this puja. They also sing devotional songs, kirtans, light diyas, and decorate their homes.
